Chasah (חָסָה) is a Hebrew word meaning refuge, shelter, and trusting in God’s protection.
It comes from a primitive root word related to Mechaseh, meaning “refuge,” and is found in Psalm 91:2.
“I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’”
- Psalm 91:2
How the Name Came to Be
The name Chasah has deep personal meaning to our church, rooted in a vision God placed on the heart of Ross Reitzammer, a founding member who has been part of our lives for more than 15 years.
In 1978, after completing lay institute courses at Dallas Theological Seminary, Ross felt a clear call into ministry. (This was before moving to Oak Cliff to begin ministry with young Hispanic children.) During that season, he had a vision of a ministry simply called Chasah. The vision was to be a refuge for those who were lost, to meet people where they were without judgment, and to share the good news of the Gospel and the love of God.
Now, more than 46 years later, that vision has returned.
One morning, while spending time in prayer on the patio, Ross began searching for a church name that would not feel overly “religious,” but would still communicate hope and be welcoming to those who may not yet believe. In that moment, he remembered the vision God gave him decades earlier: Chasah - Refuge.
Later, when searching online, Ross discovered that a ministry in Brisbane, Australia already used the name. Their description reads:
“Chasah is a Network of House Churches, local and international. His House, our Home. One Body - One Bride - One Church!”
We love that this name reflects both our mission and our heart: to be a place of refuge, trust, and hope in Jesus Christ.
